World Water Day
World Water Day is coming up this month on the 22nd of March. This day focuses on the importance of freshwater to life on earth. It highlights the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6: ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.
What is this day all about?
World Water Day is the linkage between water and climate change. This day calls on policymakers to put water access and sustainable management at the top of their action plans. Groundwater is invisible but it’s everywhere, it can be found in rocks, sands and water. As climate change gets worse, groundwater too.
Groundwater is overused and because we cannot see it it can potentially impact our water resources. Sustainably using groundwater can help adapt to climate change and meet the growing population on this earth. Fast fashion production chains utilise so much water to continue manufacturing their clothes. Research found that it takes 2,700 litres of water to make the average cotton t-shirt and that's enough drinking water for one person for 900 days
Importance of sustainable management
This day raises awareness for the people living without access to safe water. Tackling the global water crisis now can improve water sanitation by 2030. We cannot overlook the value and importance of water. It provides for households, health, economics and our natural environment. It is irreplaceable. Now we the Covid-19 pandemic, sanitation has become more important than ever. Hand hygiene is essential to containing the spread of Covid-19 and other diseases.
Some countries are unable to access cleaning drinking water due to the water quality and wastewater due to pollution, climate change and demanding industry trends. Fashion brands produce an increasing amount of waste in landfills. Groundwater can get polluted from pesticides to waste from landfills. This waste makes its way into an aquifer, which holds water and makes it unsafe for human use. This impacts the availability of water supply and can impact the overall environment. Once the water is polluted, it can be unusable for decades or even thousands of years.
Hundred Line’s Commitment
At Hundred Line Clothing, we care about the sustainability of our production. Therefore we use natural materials that do not abstract water as much as fast fashion brands do.
We love to believe that our range of clothing is timeless, simplistic and ethical and we follow that all the way through as we look after our supply chains and contribute our part to sustainable management of water.
Clean, usable water is incredibly important, therefore we are advocates for the sustainable management of freshwater resources.
