What is linen and why is it sustainable?
So, I'm sure everyone has heard of linen and that if you want to be a sustainable shopper you should be including as much linen in your wardrobe as possible. If you follow us on our social media, you definitely would have seen us raving about linen and that we use it for most of our products at Hundred Line.
But why exactly is it sustainable?
What is linen?
Before we get into why Linen is one of the most sustainable textiles on the market, let's go over what exactly linen is.
Linen is a textile that is used mostly for clothing and is comprised of fibers taken from the flax plant. It is a super strong material meaning it's great for clothes since it won't wear and tear easily.
This fabric is so good that it can be worn in any season! It's breathable enough that it can even be worn throughout the hotter months.

Why is it sustainable?
Firstly, linen uses the entire flax plant that it is made from, meaning that no waste is created from the product – this is amazing as it means there are no scraps left over that end up in landfill. As it's made from a plant, it helps us head towards a circular economy since the flax can keep being regrown and used for years to come. This contrasts with fabrics such as polyester which are made from nonrenewable fossil fuels (very very bad for the environment) and are unfortunately one of the most common fabrics used for clothes!
Linen also takes little resources and energy to make which means that fewer carbon emissions are being released into the environment while it is being produced. Overall, it’s a much better substitute for clothing than most of the other fabrics on the market (some would even argue it’s the best!)
