Best Summer Spots In New Zealand

Summer is just around the corner and we are here for it. Even though we may not be able to travel internationally, we can still have the same fun here in Aotearoa. We have prepared the ultimate guide for the best Summer spots in New Zealand. We have such a beautiful country filled with so much nature. We will give you the best locations for eats, natural experiences and beaches.

Eats

Crayfish - Kaikōura

Nin’s Bin is known for its Crayfish and has people queuing up for this goodness. Family owned since the 1970s and it’s right next to the beach - that’s a bonus. All their crayfish are caught fresh and cooked so you can enjoy them on the beach. If you’re in Kaikoura, it’s a must-go to taste a kiwi classic.

Cider - Hawke's Bay

Zeffer Cider is the best-known cider in this town. It is highly regarded and has won multiple awards, bells and whistles. If you’re after a nice beverage during summer, visit Hawke’s Bay or purchase yourself some Zeffer Cider. The secret to their well-established cider is in the apples. Visit the Hawke’s Bay orchard and enjoy a handmade, small-batch cider whilst you soak in that Summer sun.

Cheese - Mercer

Cheeeeese, we couldn’t forget you. Mercer Cheese uses traditional Dutch recipes, local and fresh milk to create a delight. Visit the Mercer Cheese Shop to stock up on delicious cheese packed with flavours.

Jam - Roxburgh

Summer calls for fresh fruits and jam. Roxburgh is well known for its fresh produce, jams, chutneys, dried fruits and nuts. To get all of this goodness, visit Johnsons Cottage, this family-owned orchard has been growing fruit for over 100 years and they are not stopping! If you want mouth-watering fresh fruits and jam, you must come here.

Oysters - Clevedon

Now to the oysters. You can’t have Summer without your classic oysters and here’s where to find it. Clevedon Coast Oysters have been growing oysters for over 30 years in the clean, clear waters of the Hauraki Gulf. You can choose to buy fresh oysters or you can dig into more dishes such as pies, soup and pate. This is a perfect stop over before hitting the beach.

Beaches

Bay Of Islands

Where do we start? The Bay Of Islands is the perfect spot for a swim, you may as well spend most of your time at this beautiful beach. You can sail alongside dolphins or cruise through the famous Hole in the Rock, kayak and explore the Bay. The Bay Of Islands is known as the winterless North. The mild climate makes it the best spot to go during Summer. It’s the perfect place for the family, there are cafes, restaurants and galleries. You can even ferry to Paihia to Russel and explore the historic buildings of our country.

Coromandel Peninsula

This place is much loved by Kiwis. We recommend you visit:

  • Hot Water Beach: A truly unique experience that every New Zealander should experience at least once in their life.

  • Karagahake Gorge: Offers a range of walking options, from short walks to full-day hikes.

  • Cathedral Cove: The natural rock archway is a popular spot to visit.

  • Pauanui: This place can ensure you can relax on holiday and explore local areas.

  • Donut Island: 20-minute Kayak from Whangamata

  • The Pinnacles: Great Summer hike before overlooking a magical sunset/sunrise.

Mount Maunganui

Can’t forget about the Mount. This place is undoubtedly one of the best Summer hotspots. There are so many things you can do here - walk the Mount, visit local stores and cafes, relax on the beach, go surfing, the list goes on. Here you’ll find a sheltered bay on the harbourside and a bustling surf beach on the ocean side. Once you reach the top of the Mount, you’ll be rewarded with a 360-degree view of the beautiful country we call home. To wind down after your hike up the Mount, visit the Mount Hot Pools.

Natural Experiences

Kaituna River

All you need are a pair of togs, a towel and a riverboard. You do need to be at least 15 years old, physically fit and a confident swimmer. It may not be suitable for everyone as it can at times be dangerous. Apart from that, you’ll be zooming down the river and enjoying yourself. The views are immaculate so if you’re slightly nervous, just look up and enjoy the scenery as you travel along the river.

Blue Pools Track

This track provides a great walk with the family. You can find this location along Haast Pass, between Wanaka and the West Coast. As you get into your walk, you’ll start to discover amazing mountain views and a forest. You will also spot a swing bridge that arches over the Makarora River. When you reach the Blue Pools, you will be shocked by how stunning the colour of the pool is. There won’t be a need to use saturation on your photos, mother nature has already taken care of that.

Bird spotting at Zealandia

Zealandia is a 225ha eco-sanctuary located just outside Wellington. Here you can see up to 40 species of birds including playful kākā parrots, endangered hihi honeyeaters and bright green kākāriki. This is a great spot for families with kids during the Summer holidays. The walking trails suit all ages and fitness levels. Zealandia also includes free tours, more information can be found on their website. But wait, there's more! This place also offers a night tour where you can discover kiwis, morepork, weta, glow-worms, tuatara and more.

New Zealand has so much to offer, our list could keep going. There are so many things we could do and places we can explore. We hope this guide helped you plan out our Summer activities and adventures.
